Luso

The 1st FEBS Redox Medicine Workshop will be held at the Grande Hotel do Luso (www.hoteluso.com), located in the small thermal village of Luso, just north of Coimbra, Portugal. Luso sits at the foot of the Bussaco mountain range and is famous for its mineral water coming from the Bussaco water table (Agua de Luso), which flows freely from fountains and springs in the town and is reported to have healing qualities, making Luso one of Portugal’s most important spa towns.

Region

At the foot of the Bussaco mountain you can find the Bairrada Wine Region, famous for its sparkling wine and unique gastronomy.

The first reports on Bairrada wine date back to the 10th century but between the 18th and 19th centuries the vines were uprooted for Port production. Bairrada recovered the control of its vineyards and in 1887 the first school of viticulture was established in the region. Today, Bairrada has the highest Portuguese wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) and its popularity has increased in the recent years being recognised as the “Sparkling Wine Capital”.

And of course, passing through Coimbra mandates a visit to this University City where you can easily discover landmarks left by those who built the nation, including the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 by King D. Dinis which is home to the magnificent scale of the Joanine Library.
Coimbra is home to poets and fado, love stories and even miragles.
